A "scentless" fragrance may be an answer to corporate No-fragrance policies

No-fragrance corporate policies are typically implemented to protect employees who have allergies or sensitivities to fragrances. These policies can also help to create a more inclusive and welcoming workplace for all employees. There is no comprehensive data on the total number of corporations in the US with no-fragrance workplace policies. However, a 2018 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management Found that 22% of US employers have no-fragrance policies in place. This suggests that there are likely thousands of corporations in the US with no-fragrance at the workplace policies.

Solution to no-fragrance policies

Some people argue that no-fragrance policies are intrusive and unnecessary. They say that employees should have the right to wear whatever fragrances they want as long as it's not disruptive to the workplace. Some believe that they are unnecessary or ineffective when there's no evidence that fragrance is harmful to the workplace. However, it is important to remember that the right to work in a safe and healthy environment is more important than the right to wear fragrances.

A truce may be offered to the two confronting sides of the story. What if we tell that a fragrance brand is already available in the market that is arguably “scentless”? How peculiar it may sound but at least 16% of the users we interviewed have confirmed that they don’t feel any scent after using these fragrances, while 20% said that they could only smell it faintly. The fragrance brand is  Escentric Molecules. Presently, it has a total 23 different unisex fragrances at its disposal.

Molecule 1 scentless fragrance

What sets Escentric Molecules apart is its ground-breaking scientific approach to perfumes. Each of their fragrances contains only a single aroma molecule, with other seemingly odourless ingredients meticulously chosen to accentuate and enhance this central aroma molecule. These fragrances are known for its unique ability to develop differently on each individual wearer, creating a truly unique and personal scent. The fragrance is also known for being very long-lasting.

So, if you ever find yourself in an organization with a strict no-fragrance policy, these fragrances from Escentric Molecules could be a viable option to explore.

Can males actually distinguish between the type of female fragrances?

In a 2017 study conducted by researchers at the University of California, it was found that individuals who use fragrances are often viewed as more attractive, capable, and trustworthy. This should encourage us to include fragrances into our daily routines. However, there's a twist to this. What if we were to reveal that men struggle to differentiate between the various fragrances worn by women? If this revelation is discouraging, don't fret, as this article provides further insights.

Men on female fragrances
(AI-generated image)

The global market for women's fragrances boasted a value of $55.48 billion in 2021, with projections suggesting it will reach $68.86 billion by 2028. Presently, there are over 200,000 women's fragrances listed on Fragrantica.com's database. It's possible that many female fragrance enthusiasts use their favourite scents to capture the attention of their male counterparts. Compliments play a significant role in both personal and professional spaces for them. However, a fundamental question underlies this discussion.

Can males actually distinguish between the type of female fragrances?

It is a very complex question that depends on a number of factors, including the type of fragrance, the concentration of the fragrance, the individual's sense of smell, and their experience with different fragrances.

Some studies have shown that males are able to distinguish between different types of fragrances, while others have found that their ability to do so is limited. For example, a 2004 study published in the journal Chemical Senses found that men were able to distinguish between the fragrances of rose, orange, and jasmine, but they were not able to identify the specific fragrances. Their ability to distinguish between fragrances was better when the fragrances were presented in a higher concentration. The study's authors suggest that the findings may be due to the fact that men have a less developed sense of smell than women. For example, women have a higher number of olfactory receptor neurons than men.

Another study, published in the journal PLOS One in 2013, found that men were able to identify the scents of different essential oils, such as lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus, with an accuracy of 75%. Women were able to identify the scents of the same essential oils with an accuracy of 85%.

It is important to note that these studies were conducted in controlled laboratory settings. It is possible that in the real world, where there are many other factors that can interfere with the sense of smell, males may have difficulty distinguishing between different types of fragrances worn by females.

Despite these limitations, the study provides valuable insights into men's ability to distinguish between different types of fragrances. More research is needed to confirm the findings of this study and to better understand the factors that influence men's sense of smell. The findings may have implications for the development of perfumes and other fragrances for men. For example, perfumes for men may need to be more concentrated in order to be effective.

When it comes to the world of fragrances, there's something undeniably captivating about the mysterious and elegant aura that surrounds them. One such fragrance, the Bond 9, has been a topic of intrigue for many scent aficionados. The name Bond No. 9 is a reference to the address of the brand's flagship boutique in New York City, which is located at 9 Bond Street. Pumpkin fragrances attract men the most!

Yes, it’s true irrespective of how ridiculous it may sound to you. It is already a clinically proven research. In 2010, the Chicago-based Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation conducted an interesting study on 31 male volunteers in the age group of 18-64. It was aimed at testing the sensation effects of 24 different odorants (fragrances) including pumpkin on the pelvic muscles. In the test results, pumpkin together with lavender was producing the strongest stimulus with 40% of the volunteers reporting greater blood flow into those muscles. Surprisingly, the same percentage for floral and chocolate are just 3.0 and 2.8 respectively. If women (not everyone) prefer to wear fragrances with a belief that they would complement their sensuality, then this research has greater utility for them. They may give pumpkin-note-based fragrances a chance.

Mosquito repellent as your perfume! The New Yorkers did it.

Yes, you read it correct. The brand is “Florida Water” by Lanman & Kemp Barclay company.  The product was launched in the year 1808 by Scottish perfumer Robert I. Murray in New York. He was inspired by the mythical “Fountain of Youth”, which was rumoured to be located in Florida, and he believed that the name "Florida Water" would evoke this image.

Initially, the product was to be used as a mosquito repellent. The perfume contains essential oils such as lavender, neroli, and orange blossom, which are known for their insect-repellent properties. More and more new immigrants were coming in and the city was rapidly growing and expanding into new areas that were previously marshy and swampy. These marshy areas were ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. In this situation, Florida Water quickly became popular, and it was sold in pharmacies and corner stores all over the country.

In 1835, David Trumbull Lanman joined the company, and the firm became Murray & Lanman which was renamed Lanman & Kemp in 1861. It has been in continuous production ever since as a family-owned business and is the oldest perfumery in the United States.

(Florida Water advertising, 1880)

Florida Water was rebranded as a fragrance in the 1950s when a new advertising campaign featured images of glamorous women wearing the fragrance. These ads also emphasized the fragrance's exotic and romantic scent. This rebranding was successful, and Florida Water quickly became popular as a fragrance.

Today, Florida Water is still marketed as a fragrance. It is also used in religious and magical rituals. However, the product's original use as a mosquito repellent is no longer widely known. It has a fresh, citrusy scent with floral and spicy undertones. The top notes include Lemon, bergamot, and neroli which provide a bright and refreshing opening.     Lavender, rose, and cinnamon constitute the heart notes and the base notes have Orange flowers, cloves, and nutmeg. These floral and spicy heart and base notes add depth and complexity.

We analysed the customer reviews available online to assess their preferences while using Florida Water. The following result has been obtained where the majority of the consumers use the product for spiritual and religious practices and only 20% of the customers use the product as a true fragrance. However, these are just estimates, and the actual use of Florida Water by consumers may vary.

So, your beloved Florida Water has evolved as an iconic and unique product. The story is full of twists and turns but still very much relevant.

Four things to consider before buying an alcohol-free fragrance

According to several medical studies, between 1-3% of the world’s population have allergic problems with alcohol-based perfumes. This has been one of the prime reasons behind the rise of alcohol-free fragrances. There are currently over 100 perfume brands offering alcohol-free fragrances. This includes a mix of niche and mainstream brands. A recent study by the market research firm Mintel found that the number of alcohol-free fragrance launches has increased by 15% in 2022. So, the market is growing rapidly with more and more brands offering alcohol-free options to their customers.

Alcohol free fragrance

(AI-drawn image)

Generally, the brands label their fragrances as alcohol-free before marketing them to their customers. This has been the standard practice for years. However, several facts are often disregarded by general customers while purchasing their favourite alcohol-free fragrances. For their well-being, we are trying to highlight these facts in this article.

Four things to consider before buying

  1. “Parfum” which is a French word for perfume. Parfum is a mixture of fragrance compounds and alcohol, and the alcohol content of parfum can vary widely. Some perfumes contain as little as 10% alcohol, while others contain as much as 90% alcohol. It is important to note that the term "alcohol-free" is not regulated in the cosmetics industry. This means that manufacturers can use this term to label their products even if they contain small amounts of alcohol. Consumers should be aware of this and read the ingredient list carefully before purchasing any cosmetic product.
  2. It is important to note that there is no official definition of what constitutes an "alcohol-free" perfume. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a perfume can be labelled as alcohol-free if it contains less than 10% alcohol. However, some people may still be sensitive to even small amounts of alcohol, and they may experience skin irritation or other adverse reactions. So, it is important to be aware of the potential risks before using any product that claims to be alcohol-free.
  3. Another piece of evidence is if the specific product contains benzaldehyde. Benzaldehyde is a naturally occurring compound that is found in many fruits and vegetables, but it is also a common ingredient in perfumes and other scented products. Benzaldehyde is typically dissolved in alcohol before it is added to cosmetic products. So, if a product description has mentioned the presence of benzaldehyde, be aware.
  4. Luxury brands are often more secretive about their formulas. Often they use the term “trade secret formula” in their product description. This means that the company is not required to disclose all of the ingredients including alcohol in its products. Often these fragrances have a very strong, and long-lasting scent, which suggests that they contain a high concentration of fragrance compounds. Alcohol is often used to dissolve and diffuse these compounds. Their customers have often been complaining about the possible presence of alcoholic substances.

So, what options do we have now?

For your convenience, we have selected three perfumes, viz., Clean Reserve Rain, Byredo Blanche, and Acqua di Parma Colonia which are officially labelled as alcohol-free and their customers have also never felt any alcohol in their notes so far. However, before going about a discussion on their respective qualities, let us tell our readers that we are not promoting these brands and we don’t have any affiliation with their products. Their selections have been made based on analysing the public-domain information and the customer reviews and feedback. We can not guarantee their “alcohol-free” status. This customers are advised to enquire themselves before making any purchase.

Perfume

Manufacturing methods

Clean Reserve Rain

Water-based solution

Byredo Blanche

Water-based solution with emulsifier

Acqua di Parma Colonia

Carrier oil (grape seed oil)

These perfumes use a variety of different methods to achieve their alcohol-free status. For example, some perfumes use water-based solutions to disperse the essential oils, while others use carrier oils such as grape seed oil.

Water-based solutions are a common way to make alcohol-free perfumes. The essential oils are dispersed in the water using an emulsifier. This creates a stable emulsion that prevents the essential oils from separating from the water.

Carrier oils are another common way to make alcohol-free perfumes. The essential oils are simply blended with the carrier oil to create a perfume. Carrier oils such as jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, and sunflower oil are often used because they are non-comedogenic (meaning they won't clog pores) and have a long shelf life.
